Cold winds swept over the IJssel River in November 1813, when Bashkir troops pitched their bivouac at the river shores, where they built a Ship-bridge to cross this major obstacle in their pursuit of Napoleon. Turbulent times – inspiration for Beethoven to write Sonates, reflecting the emotions of those days.

November 1813 – November 2020

November 1813 – cold winds swept over the IJssel River in November 1813, when the 1rst Regiment of Bashkir troops pitched their bivouac in the village of Wijhe. The Low Countries were suffering under French rule. A month earlier, Napoleon was defeated at Leipzig and the Allied forces chased the French back to France. In their pursuit of Napoleon, the IJssel River proved to be a major obstacle. By building a Ship-bridge between both river shores, these courageous horsemen, who had made their way from the foothills of the Ural mountains, could continue their victorious campaign for the liberation of the Netherlands from French occupation.

Poets and composers translated the tensions of these days into texts and melodies. Turbulent times, that inspired also Beethoven to write Sonates, reflecting the emotions of those days.

Huize Kolthoorn

Participant Citta Slow Heerde.

Huize Kolthoorn is the country house on the Kolthoorn estate dating from 1880, which once covered the entire hamlet of Kolthoorn with the adjacent woodland and heathland areas (now Landgoed Boshoven).

In 1899, the then internationally renowned painter Jan Kleintjes (1872-1955) and his wife Hedwig Kleintjes-van Osselen (1871-1936) moved into the main house with coach house and transformed it into an artist's paradise with a large studio (1904) and a beautifully landscaped garden. Performances were organized regularly. Museum Geelvinck has its roots in the house, which has been inhabited by the Buisman family since 1956. The office and depot of Museum Geelvinck have also been located there for several decades. Since the move from Zutphen, some historical pianos have found their place in the large studio.
