Composed between 1886 and 1889, Debussy’s Petite Suite has long been considered one of the most beautiful works in the literature.  At the request of Jacques Durand, the famed publisher and an accomplished amateur pianist, Debussy wrote the suite and gave the world premiere with Durand as his partner.

Schubert’s Impromptus are some of the few works published during his lifetime, and the Theme and Variations from Op. 142 is musically most substantial.  The main theme resembles a theme from the incidental music that Schubert composed for the play Rosamunde, The variations follow the classic pattern utilized and developed by Beethoven – elements include increasing subdivision and ornamentation, and a modulation prior to a return to the tonic for the final full variation – see the Arietta of Beethoven’s Op. 111, and most prominently, the Diabelli Variations.

In his late 40s, the married Fauré fell in love with Emma Bardac. The affair inspired a burst of creativity and a new originality in his music. Fauré wrote the Dolly Suite for piano duet between 1894 and 1897 and dedicated it to Bardac’s daughter Hélène, known as “Dolly”. Some people suspected that Fauré was Dolly’s father.  The Dolly Suite displays the refinement, charm, and harmonic transparency that characterizes much of Fauré’s piano music, while also maintaining a somewhat childlike naïveté.

Ravel originally wrote Mother Goose Suite as a piano duet for the Godebski children, Mimi and Jean, ages 6 and 7. Ravel dedicated this work for four hands to the children (just as he had dedicated an earlier work, Sonatine, to their parents).  It has gone on to become one of the most popular works for piano duet, it’s beauty and simplicity are quite irresistible.  Ravel later orchestrated the entire work.

Debussy’s Image for solo piano is the quintessential impressionistic expression in music, its use of exotic texture and tonal scales are truly extraordinary and refreshing.

Ginastera, arguably the most important composer from Argentina, composed Danzas Argentinas in 1937, it is a set of three folk dances of highly contrasting characteristics, these works have become this composer’s most popular opus.

The program will conclude with the brilliant and challenging Andante and Allegro Brilliant by Mendelssohn, it’s one of the most technically demanding works for piano duet featuring running passages of utmost velocity and complexity.
